M.I.A’s release of ‘Borders’ that surfaced last week has been accompanied by a politically charged video that follows her on a journey with refugees.

The British artist Maya who has Sri Lankan roots shows immensely how she is one of the only artists able to merge pop culture with important global issues. This powerful video is saying in this song what really needs to be said in reference to the refugee crisis. “We are are solid and we don’t need to kick them” is a stand out line that is repeated in the song, it’s a comment on our position as a country and the viewpoint that the refugees may be threatening us, when they are the ones who need help .The lyrics too highlight and question the western world’s privilege and power and criticise goverment’s failure to act. Noticeably at one point in the video she stands in solitude with Paris wearing a Paris Saint-Germain soccer jersey with the “Fly Emirates” logo replaced by “Fly Pirates.”

She posted this tweet in reference to the video.

Weirdly enough, the video has been taken off M.I.A’s Youtube channel…

What do you think of the video?

A photo shoot in Peckham by conceptual art lifestyle project and brand The Lurkers. The images are in collaboration with Wavey Garms.

I found this particularly eye-catching as a South London creative resident as the shoot that can be found on The Lurkers website features Canavan’s Peckham Pool Club, which is  just one of the venues in the area of Peckham that is currently threatened by redevelopment plans. Likewise The Bussey Building and Rye Wax are too part of the active creative and cultural growth in the area that are facing possible closures.

You can find the petition to sign against the redevelopment in Peckham on The Lurkers website and here too.

Sarah Butler is a 20 year old illustrator studying at london college of communication. With a Dutch and  South african heritage and being brought up on the Isle of Man she has many cultural experiences, passions and interests. After studying foundation in art at Bournemouth she has recently moved to London to continue her passion of illustration. Originally after discovering Sarah a few years ago on Instagram, her drawings were of the more fine art style, pencil illustrations of models and over the years she has progressed to a wonderfully unique style of illustration and has recently began to experiment with graphics. With her favourite colour baby pink being coherent throughout a lot of her drawings, her unusual style features a lot of print screening, distorting of shapes, lines and squiggles all to form often grotesque images of people. Interestingly as someone passionate about music she incorporates restructured vinyl records into her art with a great effect.

One of my favourite pieces of work by Sarah is her recent work on politicians. She designed two pieces surrounding the idea of the daily mail and the sun readers and the idea of politicians lying to us through the media. One is called “take what they say with a pinch of salt” and the other “don’t be spoon-fed trash media”. You can find these featured below.

Speaking of the future, Sarah has said that she would love to design album covers and work with producers on this. Below is her own illustration work as a redesign for Murlo’s – Last Dance EP.

XOYO hosted its first PC Music night last night and what a success it was. The atmosphere from the get go was incredible, smiling faces bouncing around as much in time as they could attempt to to the fast and disjointed electronic sounds of Danny L Harle and A.G Cook.

I along with my friend found ourselves giggling as soon as we entered room 1 of the club just at the ridiculousness of  the sounds of PC filling up such a commercial London club and at what was an almost out of this world experience that is hard to describe without mentioning the likeliness to a happy hardcore rave. Perhaps one of the most eccentric underground music scenes in London at the moment, yet we were all there for the same reason… there was a strange sense of unity you don’t often get from techno nights.

The Princess of PC  Hannah Diamond made and appearance as the special guest and heightened the atmosphere even more, promptly followed by Kane West who changed the tempo from the more extreme experimental sounds of PC that to a more bass filled dancey vibe. The crowd were in full swing and yellow foam letters were flying around the room.

Unlike many other music genres and the repetitive slump that can be easy to fall into, it was strange and refreshing to end the night on the same level we started with, we left on a high and with the feeling we had really experienced something!

If you can remember and were a fan of Santigold’s – Santigold album which featured the iconic tracks such as “L.E.S. Artistes” and “Creator” then you will be excited to hear the news of Santigold’s return. She has returned to the music world after sharing a track “Cant Get Enough of Myself” from her new album titled ’99 cents’ which will be released in 2016.

The track is accompanied by a garish pink art-pop image of her glamorous self wrapped in plastic packaging surrounded by products. On consumer culture Santigold said of her album artwork “Everything is a product at this point, including people and relationships, and everything’s about marketing products. So, I’m a product. And also, everything is undervalued, so I thought 99 cents is a good price for me and my life and all my hard work.” Is she hinting at the idea that she feels she may be underrated as an artist?

Take a listen to the track, it’s an upbeat good feeling track of self love with infectious claps, whistles, high pitched vocals and a funky drum-line.
